Netherton, Maj. Thomas H. Major Thomas Netherton's life was all about family, responsibility, duty and honor. He died on March 3 in Minneapolis, MN at the age of 85. Tom was born on January 27, 1923 in Chicago, IL. He eventually moved to the hills of North Carolina where he embraced the South and was always considered a "Southern Gentleman." After the death of his father, he returned to Chicago where he graduated from high school, before enlisting in the U.S. Army. During World War II and Korea, Major Netherton made indelible marks. He had achieved much while serving his country. He was proud of being a member of the 82nd Airborne (completing 48 parachute jumps). Tom was a highly decorated soldier and received three Bronze Stars for valor while serving in the European Theatre and the Korean Conflict. Major Netherton retired from the Army in 1961, at which time he was Captain of the 5th Army Rifle Team. Tom was a great marksman! After serving 20 years in the military, he held a position in sales until he retired. His intelligence and wit was evident to all who knew him. His entire family will always remember him as a man of fine character, honor and much love. Survived by his wife & best friend, Liz Pugsley Netherton; children, Thomas H. Jr., Bradley (Paula), Julie Kobielush (Bruce), Wendy Siebold; 9 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson; 2 stepsons, Michael Pugsley, Paul Pugsley (Linda); 2 step-grandchildren; many relatives and friends. Brenda Gunter Netherton, 73, of Lexington, passed on Thursday, December 10, 2020. Born in Columbia, SC, she was the eldest daughter of the late Luther Burdell and Mary Ellen Young Gunter. She was a graduate of The University of South Carolina, where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Nursing. Mrs. Netherton retired from the Tucker Center in Columbia, SC, where she was a geriatric nurse for 25 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who instilled the love of family to everyone she met. She was an active member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in West Columbia, SC. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Christopher James Netherton, Sr. (Amy Shannon Netherton) of Lexington; sister, Leonina Gallagher; brother, Marion Gunter; nephew, Brandon Gunter; grandchildren, Christopher James Netherton, Jr., Caitlyn (Netherton) Parrish, and Timothy Shannon.
