No body has been able to tell How ever there are many theories but all without concrete foundation Some contend that horses possess ing small feet are able to negoi ate the deep footing contending that because of the size the horse is able to draw the foot from the heavy mud with the least resls tence Then there are others who that those with broad rounded feet are more capable for this effort believing that the larger feet will not sink as deeply and consequently their running is less tiring These are only per sonal conclusions and have been found wanting in real facts Ability Inherited The only substantial knowledge which reveals any enllghtment upon mud running horses is that it is definitely a hereditary char acteristic There are families which means strains of individual blood lines that transmit the powers of running on either fast or slow going This ability was handed down strongly to our Maryland Preakness winner Challedon through his sire Every horse sired by Challenge
