🚗 There's so much to say from an environmental psychology perspective about this fascinating episode of The Daily podcast with Ana Ley (The New York Times) on why #congestionpricing was called off by governor Kathy Hochul in New York City just before it got started:https://lnkd.in/eHyknz9s🚗 As mentioned in the episode, #Stockholm introduced it in 2006, but there were doubts about its benefits before it was implemented. Our former colleague Geertje Schuitema, together with Linda Steg and Sonja Forward, researched acceptability levels among Stockholm residents before *and* after roll out of congestion charges in a 2018 paper: https://lnkd.in/emW-qj2D🚗 They found that people liked the congestion charge more after trying it because they were seeing the benefits like less traffic and pollution, despite initial worries: "Respondents believed the charge had more positive consequences (viz., decreasing parking problems, congestion, and #pollution) and less negative consequences (viz., financial cost increases) after the trial than they had expected beforehand."🚗 Another relevant point is that resistance may just be a routine element of social change involving #sustainable behaviours. Pushback is a phase along the way to a #socialtippingpoint, as shown by a recent paper by Madeline Judge, Thijs Bouman, Linda Steg and Jan Willem Bolderdijk published in One Earth: https://lnkd.in/e6xPkDnb🚗 Of course, as in the case of #NewYorkCity, politicians with term limits are concerned about that push back translating into lost votes. But studies increasingly show that many people actually want more (sufficiency-oriented) climate policy from elected officials, not less: https://lnkd.in/e_Aupbb2(TheIPCC defines #sufficiency as "policy measures & daily practices that avoid the demand for energy, land, water & other natural resources while providing wellbeing for all within the planetary boundaries" - like congestion charges, for example) https://lnkd.in/eWzrjs2K🚗 So, while resistance may occur in the initial stages of a new policy or behavior, our studies have shown that acceptance can increase following implementation of pro-environmental policy. In New York, we may never know if the public would have accepted it, because it may never happen.#environmentalpsychologyUniversity of GroningenFaculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen

Why does bridging the gap between theory and practice matter so much? 🌉Our summer school – The Next Step: bridging the gap between theory and practice – is two weeks away. We’re looking forward to welcoming all the PhD candidates, supervisors and sponsors to Groningen and putting our heads together to tackle real-world problems with environmental psychology theory. We spoke with several of the supervisors to find out why they’re excited about the summer school, and why it’s so important to apply #environmentalpsychology theory to societal issues. Here are some highlights:🌉 Associate professor Amanda Carrico (University of Colorado Boulder): "We won't know how good our theories really are until we test them in real world settings and apply them to solve practical problems."🌉 Associate professor Ellen van der Werff (University of Groningen): "We are much more effective in addressing key research questions and applying theoretical insights to practical problems if we work together."🌉 Environmental psychology Dr. Isabella Uhl-Hädicke (Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg): "In my opinion, making the theoretical scientific knowledge applicable in the practice is a key responsibility of an environmental psychologist."You can find all of the supervisors' responses in our latest blog post at the link below!https://lnkd.in/ezx6TeqJFaculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen

How can research help ensure more impactful public participation in the energy transition? 🙋🏻Our colleague associate professor Goda Perlaviciute was one of three University of Groningen researchers nominated for this year's Ben Feringa Impact Award for her work in the field of #publicparticipation and the #energytransition. The award, presented annually since 2021, seeks to recognise researchers and students at the University of Groningen who have made outstanding achievements through impact-driven research.Adjunct professor Raffaella Carloni took home the researcher's prize during a ceremony on 21 May, but the nomination itself is much appreciated acknowledgement of the relevance and necessity of Goda’s academic work in the field of #environmentalpsychology.Listen to Goda speak about her research and why it matters in her own words:https://lnkd.in/eqdWXfqhUniversity of GroningenFaculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen

The IAAP (International Association of Applied Psychology) has endorsed our summer school, The Next Step 🏅Sabine Pahl, president of the International Association of Applied Psychology’s Environmental Division, expresses her strong support for our upcoming summer school: "I am delighted that this well-established initiative once again brings together the best scholars in the field with the next generation of environmental psychologists, to discuss, create and push the boundaries of our discipline.”Did you know that this is actually the fourth edition of the STEP (Summer school on Theories in Environmental Psychology)? The first one was held right here in Groningen back in 2009, with the goal of being the start of a series with each subsequent STEP being organised by a different EP department. Since then, STEP summer schools have been held in:🇩🇰 Aarhus, Denmark (organised by one of our supervisors this year, John Thøgersen)🇮🇹 Alghero, Italy (organised by Marino Bonaiuto)🇮🇪 Dublin, Ireland (organised by our alumnus Geertje Schuitema)And this summer, STEP returns to Groningen! #environmentalpsychologyFaculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of GroningenUniversity of Groningen

Adaptation behaviour is about more than just risks ☂️☂️ A recent report by thePBL Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency), titled “Climate Risks in the Netherlands: The current state of affairs”, recognizes the urgency to adapt to climate change as its effects are already being felt in the Netherlands:https://lnkd.in/gAg8se5k☂️ While the report identifies behaviour change as relevant to preventing different#climatechange risks, its importance is not explicitly identified within the overall #adaptation strategy. ☂️ Read this blog post by our colleague Anne van Valkengoed to hear about why providing people with so many options for ways to adapt for better health outcomes can actually be a double-edged sword:https://lnkd.in/etAMXgwa☂️ Want to hear more from Anne on this topic? She’ll be one of the speakers during a session on getting people more involved in climate adaptive behaviour during the National Climate Adaptation Conference (organised by Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat and Provincie Utrecht) on 17 June. ☂️ The conference, which will be in Dutch, is the largest event focused on climate adaptation in the Netherlands and will be held at NBC Congrescentrum, Blokhoeve 1, Nieuwegein. Today is the final day to register!Click the link below to sign up:https://lnkd.in/eceMCKxCUniversity of GroningenFaculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen#environmentalpsychology
